Abused Women
Camelback volunteers work through the Area Agency on Aging to support the DOVES (Domestic Older Victims Empowerment and Safety) program. These victims of domestic violence are 50 or older and are allowed to live in peace in individual cottages as transitional housing for up to two years.
While in this safe environment, they attend group meetings designed to increase self-esteem and improve skills and communication. Community programs allow the victims to become self-sufficient, financially stable and safe. Monitored by counselors, members support each other in the decisions they are facing. The group experience often brings hope and humor to a seemingly hopeless situation.
Through our church members, donations of household items, pantry supplies, and cash are given to help furnish or update the cottages. Each time a cottage is vacated, we paint and freshen or refurbish the rooms which consist of a small living room, dining room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom.
We also provide clothing and accessories to help the ladies as they attempt to become independent and try to locate jobs. Each quarter we try to give the residents a themed party, complete with prizes or gifts. Parties have included Valentines Day, Girls Night Out, Hallowe’en, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.
In appreciation for their contributions, Camelback Church of Christ was awarded the 2007 DOVES Award for Generosity by the Area Agency on Aging, Region 1.
